Residencies & The Artist Journey
Artist residencies are the heartbeat of my practice, opportunities to create in place, listen to the landscape, and translate the spirit of a community through paint. Each residency becomes both studio and classroom, offering time for reflection and immersion in new surroundings. These experiences deepen my ongoing visual exploration of Canadian identity, and increasingly, the ways it connects to a broader global consciousness.

Selected Artist Residencies
2025 – Pouch Cove Foundation, Newfoundland
Returning to Pouch Cove marks a continuation of my dialogue with Newfoundland’s raw and elemental landscapes. This second residency offers time to explore the island’s evolving narrative, its sense of resilience, humour, and deep connection to the North Atlantic and to translate these qualities into new large-scale paintings.
2022 – Pouch Cove Foundation, Newfoundland
At the edge of the continent, where cliffs meet sea and wind carries stories, I found inspiration in the colour, character, and cadence of Newfoundland. The experience expanded my eastward journey across Canada, influencing paintings that balance realism with myth, and landscape with memory.
2022 – Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, Alberta
Nestled in the Rocky Mountains, Banff offered solitude and perspective. Here, surrounded by immense natural beauty, I began merging popular culture with landscape, a synthesis that has since become a cornerstone of my visual language. The experience reaffirmed my fascination with how national identity is shaped by environment.
2019 – Royal College of Art, London, UK
My time at the Royal College of Art Contemporary Art summer school, opened a dialogue between Canadian and international perspectives. Immersed in London’s creative energy, I explored how national symbolism translates beyond borders, and how Canadian identity can be understood through a global lens. This residency marked a pivotal step toward situating my work within the broader conversation of contemporary art.
Evolving Through Place
Each residency adds a layer to my visual dialogue with Canada – a conversation between geography, culture, and personal identity. From mountain ranges to ocean shores, the experiences gathered through these residencies continue to shape the stories I tell on canvas. Together, they form a living map of inspiration, documenting not only the places I have painted, but the artist I have become through each journey.

2025 – Brandy Saturley studio in Parksville, Canada
Residencies remind me that art is both journey and exchange – a collaboration between artist, place, and people. I welcome future opportunities to create in new environments and continue expanding this dialogue through paint.
