Artist Flourishing: 2022 in Review

As the end of 2022 approaches and many are writing their year in review lists, I too am looking back at a prolific, venturesome and prosperous year making art in Canada. In any good year I find myself making between 25 and 30 new paintings, this year with all that was on my schedule I would have been happy with 15 new paintings, and as I look back at the year I realize I made 34 new paintings ) 37 if you count the studies that never ended up becoming final works. The year included travel and art making in Maui, Hawaii and Banff, Alberta. Two contrasting climates offering fertile beauty and impressions that will feed hundreds of paintings to come. At the end of each year I prepare for the next with a solid outline of what I plan to accomplish as well as big audacious hopes and dreams. This annual review and plan for the coming year offers balance as I focus on production of new work, art shows, and art sales. It can be challenging to balance artist brain with financial brain, but it is essential in moving to each next level with my art career. Being a successful Canadian artist carries responsibility as success is earned and the rent is due every every single day. Here are some highlights from a year I will call ‘Flourishing’. Cheers to 2023!

January – began with new paintings that were off-the-cuff as I challenged myself to make art in the moment and without the usual photo reference. These paintings offered very abstract backgrounds using shape and intense colour to communicate the landscapes that the central characters would inhabit.

Society of Canadian Artists 54th International Open Exhibition Features Portrait by Brandy Saturley

It is the 54th year for the Society of Canadian Artists Open International Exhibition, featuring paintings from across Canada in one location in Toronto. The 54th show will take place live at Papermill Gallery, Todmorden Mills Heritage Site in Toronto. From portraits to landscapes and abstracts, this fine art show presents world class original Canadian Art. Art is a voice. And in Canada – where our unique diversity of language, landscape and passion nurtures the creative spirit like few other places on earth – our artists comprise a chorus. Sometimes elegant, sometimes discordant. Through sculpture and paint, video and design software, cameras and conté crayons, the creative are saying something. In a country so creatively diverse, art is an anthem. The Society of Canadian Artists wants the world to know the tune. The SCA is committed to strengthening its national presence in Canada by promoting excellence in traditional forms of artistic expression, and by encouraging acceptance and growth of contemporary and experimental forms of visual art.

This show will be presenting a portrait from Brandy Saturley, from her ‘People of Canada Portrait Project‘. The project was a crowd-sourced and collaborative journey between an award-winning Canadian painter and Canadians. Launched during Canada’s Sesquicentennial in 2017, this project continues to unfold. Focusing on the people that make Canada a diverse and culturally rich country. From our cities to our oceans, from our mountains to our lakes, from our homes to our havens. The portrait tells the story of a father and daughter under Canadians skies. The two are holding red heart balloons tied to Tim Horton’s cups. They stand at the shores of the great lakes, the phrase ‘You Are Here’ is written in the sand. A gaggle of Canadian Geese fly past in the distance. A very Canadian painting now available for sale. This is the first ‘live’ public presentation of the piece.

The exhibition will take place from August 4th through August 27th with an Opening Reception and Awards Ceremony are August 5, 2022. Contact us for more information.

50th SCA International Exhibition

On The Cover: The 50th SCA International Exhibition

The Society of Canadian Artists 50th Open International Exhibition welcomed Canadian Art lovers on July 26 at Papermill Gallery, Todmorden Mills Heritage Museum. The show is an outstanding representation of Art in Canada. From realism to abstraction, and emerging to established; the variety of artwork from across Canada is a rare treat for art lovers and art collectors alike. Earlier in July, I shipped my new work to this exhibition, and am thrilled to see my painting, ‘Balance’ made the cover of the show catalogue. After 50 years of the show, this is the first year an exhibition catalogue was published. The SCA 50th International Open Juried Exhibition Catalogue, Library and Archives Canada Cataloguing in Publication ISBN / ISMN 978-1-7750038-3-0 is published by the Society of Canadian Artists, designed by DEL ART and printed by Nova Printing.

This is the first time the painting ‘Balance’ – depicting a polar bear balancing precariously on an iceberg, uplifted by a female hand, has been exhibited to the public. The painting is contemporary, timely, and highly detailed with realistic foreground imagery and more abstract shapes and colours occupying the background of the piece. The piece is part of a new series of paintings, re-imagining landscape painting in Canada. These ‘portraits of the landscape’ are filled with symbolism, and radiate joy with their saturated colour palettes. ‘Balance’ will be on view and available for purchase until August 19th.

Exhibition Papermill Gallery Toronto: Timely painting depicting a polar bear balancing on an iceberg on display

New artwork by Brandy Saturley will be unveiled by the Society of Canadian Artists (SCA) at the 50th International Juried Art Exhibition at Papermill Gallery in Toronto, Ontario. The show runs July 24 – August 19, 2018 at Papermill Gallery at Todmorden Mills Museum, 69 Pottery Road in Toronto, Canada. The painting depicting a polar bear balancing at the peak of an iceberg, upheld by a human hand is a timely piece that speaks to global warming an the need to preserve what soon could be extinct. The painting is part of a new body of work that Saturley has been developing following her ‘Canadianisms’ exhibitions of 2017. Join us July 26, 2018 Official Opening and Awards Presentation, Thursday evening 7:00 to 9:30pm.

The painting shows life in balance – the elevation of the spirit through the landscape, and in this case, the Northern landscapes, with icebergs, polar bears and aurora skies. Whether it be Alaska or Newfoundland, these icebergs are precious natural resources. A timely painting as climate change continues to erode the polar bear’s natural habitat.
